When the context of the play is seen in light of contemporary theatrical standards, directors, stage managers, and actors can co-create moment-to-moment relationships in a replicable manner. By choreographing the details like dance or fight choreography, authentic interactions comes into focus through professional storytelling.

Ronald Rand's "Art of Transformation" Master Acting Workshop
Ronald Rand's "ART OF TRANSFORMATION" Master Workshop, is the only workshop in the world bringing to participants the unique opportunity of learning the 40 tools on Stanislavsky's acting chart, "The Method of Physical Actions." Together we explore through improvisation, poetry, and physical exercises, ways to unleash creativity, dealing with the "inner critic," bringing greater insight towards characterization, simplicity, revealing one's authentic voice - leading to successful auditions and truthful characterizations. The acting workshop is useful for those with experience or beginners. The great Russian Master teacher and director, Stanislavsky developed his "Method of Physical Actions" chart after 40 years of experimentation. He gave this chart personally to Stella Adler when he worked with her in 1934 in Paris. She is the only American teacher to have studied with Stanislavsky for five weeks. She brought the chart back to The Group Theatre. Ronald Rand was taught by Stella Adler for over 5 years, and his mentors include Harold Clurman, Jerzy Grotowski, Joseph Chaikin and Bobby Lewis.

PERFORMANCE: The Danube produced by Wofford College
The Danube  by Marie Irene Fornes - KCACTF4 Invited Production
Produced by Wofford College.
Due to the unique staging approach there are limited seats for this production. We are presenting two opportunities to see it.  Wednesday, Feb 6 at 3pm and Thursday, Feb 7 at 10:30 am.  Tickets will be made available at the info table in the Marriott Lobby.
Performances are at the Wofford College Theatre - Richardson Auditorium.

María Irene Fornés (1930 - 2018)

America has produced no dramatist of greater importance than María Irene Fornés, a statement with which no serious person familiar with our literature and stage practice could disagree. She’s one of the greats: Her accomplishment is unimpeachable, enduring, protean. She ranks with Albee, Guare, and Mamet; with Caryl Churchill in England and the late Heiner Müller in Berlin. I have loved her work since I first started studying and thinking about playwriting. Her plays and productions altered my understanding of what theater is; what it aims at accomplishing; what it may demand of its audience; how it speaks to the political through the personal and vice versa; and the role beauty plays in the political, redemptive, transformational power of art. Fornés is a creator of worlds of tough, exigent, overwhelming beauty.

PERFORMANCE: Bloodroot -Liberty University & Announcements
Bloodroot - a new play developed by the women's writing project at Liberty University.

Begun as a response to the challenge to create more roles for women, this play brings together six different histories of women from the Clinch Mountain area in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains.  Ranging from the  1940's back to 1755, the tales of the strong-willed and determined women who helped shape our country are explored in this thoughtful and provocative narrative.

From some of the playwrights -
I initially joined this project because it sounded like a great story to be a part of and I wanted a great résumé builder. Seeing a piece of work come together from so many different minds and the stories of beautifully strong women of our history was so inspirational. The best part of this entire process is looking into the eyes of those playing these women, embracing the connection that these women have with each other, and uniting it with our own stories of who we want to be. I hope that all who watch this show see the heartbreak, the devastation and learn to find the courage and resilience that these women found for themselves. - Sarah Beattie
This project was special because of the passion behind it - from our first meeting to our final read-through, every woman in the room was ready, willing, and excited to be telling these stories. During the process of researching and writing, I was constantly surprised by the bravery and strength shown by the women of the Clinch Mountain area. This play can only contain a small fraction of the many, but these are voices that deserve to be heard and remembered.
- Kristin Lindquist
I have learned so much and loved every moment of it! It was priceless to see all the girls in this project come together to create. When I first got involved I didn’t realize the scale of it, but I am so glad I was able to be so involved because I have learned so much about myself as a creative person and about the other women in this department. One of my favorite moments was seeing the scenes on their feet for the first time. It was like all the imaginations in my head were coming to life, and I am now hooked on the magic of playwriting. I always laugh when I remember where my scene fi rst started to where it is now. It is scary and humbling to play a character that I’ve written, but I wouldn’t trade this experience.
- Laura Falcione

Clayton State takes on Bertolt Brecht's adaptation of Antigone.  The text of the
play itself is an exciting blend of a classical text and epic theatre. Students participating in the
production and audiences were able to encounter the tragedy of Antigone, rendered through
Brecht and Malina’s words, and viewed through the lens of our contemporary vision. Though
Sophocles’ text is thousands of years old, Brecht’s adaptation 70 years old, and Malina’s
translation over 50 years old, the themes, images, and words still resonate. Throughout the
rehearsal process, actors noticed lines or moments that stood out as particularly relevant to the
current political situation in the US and integrated those resonances into their performance.

- Tony Kushner, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Angels in America

Stanislavsky Says - Focus and Ensemble Exercises from the Moscow Art Theatre
According to the Moscow Art Theatre School, there three main elements of acting are focus, ensemble, and imagination. This workshop focuses on the first two in that list. The exercises in this session are designed to develop focus skills and foster a sense of ensemble that is often difficult to achieve in early stages of actor training or in a short rehearsal period. Actors and instructors of all levels are invited to attend.

Upcycling and recycling to make interesting costume and prop items
In a world where recycling is critical and problematic and budgets are at an all time low, upcycling has become an interesting, creative and important part of design. Finding a creative alternative can be cost effective and much more accessible than the more expensive alternative. In this workshop, the discussion about budgets will be explored as well as thinking of alternatives that are readily accessible.

Designing with Images from Your Dreams
This workshop focuses on the dream life of the designer. Tess Castleman writes that the art of creating and manipulating images is both ancient and universal. "It is the art of capturing a psychological aspect in physical form (Sacred Dream Circles, 2009, p. 99). Participants will bring in dream images from which to work with and begin to dialogue with those images as a designer would begin to analyze a script. Working from and with these images opens the imagination to new opportunities of engagement with dramatic material, both scripted and devised.

Telling our Story: Claiming Space for Marginalized Populations (National Playwriting Program)
While theatre for social justice is on the rise, the stories of many marginalized communities are either often crafted by individuals outside the community or are the results of brief, unrelated partnerships. How do theatre practitioners avoid "tokenism"? As artists navigate a changing societal landscape that challenges equity, diversity must lead innovation and artistic creation. Learn current practices for cultivating narratives grounded in ethnographic drama and the difference between empowering marginalized communities and appropriation.

PERFORMANCE: Hands Up - Spelman College and Evening Announcements
There are times when art is made and times when it has to be made.
This is one of those times. This summer I was planning on directing
a gender bending version of 12 Angry Jurors for the fall semester at
Spelman. But every morning I woke up, I was witness to tragedy
after tragedy of African Americans breath being stolen from them
before they could reach the full potential of that breath and I could
not let my art be entertaining this season. I set out to motivate, to
activate, to participate, to invigorate, and most of all to mandate my
student artists to use their art to become ARTIVIST. What we have
assembled in this piece, through just a few weeks of rehearsal, is
turning these one-person monologues on their heads and making
them a community effort-onstage and off. I know that you will be
moved by this piece and my greatest desire is that it will move you
into your own sphere of creativity and awaken the ARTIVISTS in-
side of each and Every One of you....

Artistically,

Keith Arthur Bolden, MFA
